The US Falling Levees
Heated swimming pools, Jacuzzis, and gyms are three things I never appreciated before. Why in the hell would anyone bike or run in front of a TV instead of going around the city? But I found out why in the last month: because it rains for freaking two weeks without a break.
I never saw this much rain in my life! When the first break (between two storms) happened some days ago, I figured out how much I miss the sun! The wind was so strong that it knocked down two trees in the nearby park, the two big trees were totally uprooted!
The governor announced seven counties as disaster areas and declared the state of emergency there; two of the counties are a part of the North Bay. We have third world style floods in the northern bay area because of the 100 year old levee that doesn’t have enough budget to be fixed or replaced! This is for real! In 2005, the bush administration cut 18 million dollars out of the 24 million dollars budget for developing the levee system.
At a time when the US army is spending more than ONE BILLION DOLLARS every single week in Iraq alone, the United States government doesn’t have enough money to go ahead with basic development and infrastructure projects.
The billions of dollars wasted by the war adminstration should be spared to be used for better purposes. This money should be spent in fixing the many mistakes committed in Iraq, and for enhancing the qaulity of life in the US.
Anyway, I think I’ll be more active in blogging and working on other online projects (like the Iraq compensation project) in a couple of weeks. I’m finishing my second contract with the UN soon, which will set me free again for some weeks before I have more work!
On a last note, I’m still open for more suggestions and ideas about the Iraq compensation project. I started a number of small arrangements, like contacting some senators and NGOs in the US, but I’m still waiting for more concepts and strategies for carrying out such a big and important project.
